I am married now and this little piece of advice, just one of the things I got from this book, has really helped me to have a more fulfilling marriage. This is what I could consider a "new age" book and I am not normally into that genre. For one, the part about learning how to love better by studying it. Just kind of took things personally when something in my love relationships didn't work out. It sounds cliche, but it's good for everybody, I think. I have certainly had mentors in my life, like my parents, and learned from them, but you only see so much when it comes to the intimate details of a person's love life and that really hit me.
It's great for single people too. It said some things that really hit home for me though. I think it will do that for anybody, whether you have been married for a long time, or are like me and just recently married. Not only do I need mentors but I can also learn a lot about love through reading and studying it in workshops and other things. Sounds simple, but I didn't really put that together until I read this book. Also good for people who are going through a breakup.
:)I really enjoyed this book.
It does talk about a woman's relationship with her parents being the main reason for her behaviour, but what I also learnt was that a lot of women tend to focus on solving other people's (partner's). I was recommended this book after a particularly difficult break up. problems as a mean of validating their self-worth / self-esteem. I was initially sceptical about the whole self-help thing and did find that this book did not apply to me in that my parents are neither alcoholics nor were they absent. However, I dipped into the book and read what I felt was appropriate to me at the time. So, 'if I can help him I am a good person' type of thing. But as the author quite rightly points out, how can you help someone else when you are not dealing with your own skeletons. The book was thought provoking but at times quite American and repetitive nevertheless it is well worth a read if you are ready to move on from a relationship and want to understand why you are repeating the same pattern of behaviour.
"If he desired to know about automobiles, he would, without question, study diligently about automobiles. :)I have no doubt you'll fall in Love with "Love" as well. I've purchased at least 250 copies of it.
Yet, it never seems as obvious to him that if he wants to live in love, he must spend at least as much time as the auto mechanic or the gourmet in studying love." ~ Leo Buscaglia from "Love"I smile as I type these words--just having Buscaglia's book, "Love," open in front of me is enough to make me happy. and I used to bring a copy with me to nearly every business lunch I had. If his wife desired to be a gourmet cook, she'd certainly study the art of cooking, perhaps even attending a cooking class.
We used to give it away to all of our partners at my last business [.]. :)Seriously. This is hands down one of my favorite books.
(I'm a little wacky like that. By the end of reading it, you'll wish you could give Leo Buscaglia--a former Professor of Love at USC--a big ol' hug.
From the beginning , I learned & read all his books , I cannot stop thinking about what the good & important phrases I ahve learned from him.
